28 Days Later

N:A tribute to a well deserved zombie flick I must say. Thus, in the beginning one man awakens in a hospital and finds the world in a state of emergency. After a mere 28 days Jim (Cillian Murphy) awakens from coma to find a very different world. Alone. Helpless, and hungry for answers Jim is confronted by a deadly virus. A virus that has surged through the masses, turning everyone into the infected.  Now the world has been left in a state of turmoil and decay. Jim and his new comrads must fight against the hordes of blood thirsty zombies; wanting nothing more than to tear your flesh away and bath in your blood. A must see. Just don't go out at night. Thats when the zombies like to feed.

Dark Portals: The Chronicals of Vidocq

D: Time people to see a movie from across the Atlantic ocean. From the loverly French nation, we give you Dark Portals (or as its called in its native land, Vidocq).
It tis the story of  Detective Vidocq, who disappears after trailing a murderer known only as the Alchemist, who is wearing a mirror like mask. A young man who claims to be the famed detective's biographer sets out to solve the mystery of Vidocq's disapperance and finds that there was more to the case that the detective was working on then anyone could imagine. The trail of evidence leads the young biographer through the streets of Paris during the Revolution, to the secret world of the high class, and the back alleys that only a few dare go. All leading to the exciting conclusion of this dark tale.
Now, aside from having to read in subtitles, this movie was awesome. A nice original idea that keeps your interest like no other. The way that the movie was shot did set me off a little. But it was still awesome despite that. The fighting scenes were action packed, and the idea of the mirror mask and its orgins is something to behold. Bloody, but an interesting idea. I not only recommened it, I also bought it. It's that awesome. Plus you know how I heard of it? A music video that I saw on youtube a few years ago. It's the music video fo the movie itself. Its called Hope by Apocalyptica. Go ahead, check it out and tell me your not interested. Go on do it...

Krull

N: Something strange is tugging at my soul. Ha I know what it is. Memoires. Memories that sweep me into my childhood. Yet its hard to describe these past emotions that I face as I began to watch this movie. But of course if you did not grow up in the 80s or early 90s you would have a hard time understanding how these sorts of movies such as Krull makes you feel. Its like going on a far off journey. A journy back in time.

Its a race against the clock as the Slayers-an evil force hell bent on taking over the galaxy capture the princess and now Krull must rescue the fair and beautiful princess from her evil captures. Thus, be prepared. Be prepared to be fascinated and at the same time let down. This syfy-horror like thriller has all the fantasy that you will need as you go on your journey. Though a little bit like Star Wars-the premiss is A typical of a fantasy movie such as this.

Though as I have said these sorts of movies take me back. Way back when the prop and set designs had all been done by hand and most of the effects had been done with a blue screen. Though while Krull strikes fear into his enemy and fights to save everything he loves we are joined by a band of misfits (a young-middle age Liam Neeson and a very dear Robbie Coltrane best known as Rubeus Hagrid in Harry Potter) and a very likeable cyclopes. Now the army is complete. Just be careful when watching the movie that you don't get trapped in the quicksand.

Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter

D: Four score and seven years ago people, a epic president became a vampire slayer. Yes ladies and dudes, a movie that makes you wish all our presidents were this cool.
In the book turned movie, Abraham Lincoln's life before he became president was one of secrets. Yes, old honest Abe was a vampire slayer. Not only did he help free the slaves he used his axe wielding skills to slice up blood suckers.
This movie was excellent. The action just epic and a awesome way of slaying vampires. The vampires were ugly, teeth filled creatures...only when they were getting ready to feed. Till then, they were as normal looking as any human.
Yes, I would recommend this vampire flick. It's actually fun to piece together what you learned in history about old Abe and the fun vampire side. Why can't all presidents be this cool? And also, where can I go and learn those cool axe moves?

N: Grab your top hats and hang on. Thus, a new must see feature hits the big screen. A affair that entails the secrete life of Abraham Lincoln, but through a new perspective that we have never seen before. Though Mr. Lincoln was known as our president, little did we know that that he had been trained as a vampire hunter. You see for centuries vampires have been lurking in the shadows or should I say have been working along side us without the slightest indication of their presence. Though now the head of the vampire clan Adam (how fitting I should say) wants nothing more than to become part of society. Part of the American dream to say the least, and will stop at nothing to accomplish his devious plans.
Mr. Lincoln takes matters into his own hands wheeling his weapon of choice. His ax becomes his personal persuasion against the blood sucking vampires and an epic battle with matrix like fight senses ensues.

Dracula

D: Ok, I have to do this tribute cause it's just too awesome of a movie. It features the grand daddy of all vampires and the coolest of them all. I'm talking about the epic Dracula!
Made in the 90s, this blood sucking movie stars the forever legendary Gary Oldman as Dracula.  The Transylvanian prince who sells his soul to avenge the death of his beloved. But Oldman isn't the only legend in this. Anthony Hopkins also lends his epic talent to this movie as the vampire butt kicking, Abraham Van Helsing. Oh, it also stars Keanu Reeves and Wynnona Ryder.
With the role of Dracula and Van Helsing perfectly cast, and a beautiful script written, we have a recipe for one of the best vampire movies ever! Through out the movie you feel sorrow for the self cursed Dracula, you also think, 'this guys got to be stopped'. You don't know if you should root for the vampire or the vampire hunters. However, the love story in this is just beautiful. I only like a handful of love stories, but this one is just....lovely. And it's not just cause its a vampire movie either.
Everything about this movie is awesome. I never get tired of it. If you want a vampire love story, put the Twilighty movie away and pop this one in. Cause it is not only a classic story, its a legend in itself. This is sitting on my shelf and it's never going to leave it. Cause as the saying goes, Love Never Dies.

Grave Encounters

N: If you watch this horror-mockumentary as I know you will, then just watch out because you just might encounter or should I say become victimized by strange paranormal ghost or rather demons that have been lurking throughout a psychiatric facility. Thus, a group of eager ghost hunters set off on another journey, dragging their cameras and equipment-they tuck themselves in for an eight hour lock down at this facility in an effort to capture ghosts sightings. Well everything seems normal, but little by little the team is obsessively attacked by the long-dead residents of the facility. Eight hours turn into several days as they become lost in the darkness, followed by these so called demons each member encounters a most grave outcome.

D: Alright then kids, strap yourselves in for another episode of Ghost Adven....oh that's right. This isn't a documentary for TV. This is another mockumentary of people dealing with ghostly business.
It's about a crew that are ghost hunters..like ghost adventures. And they go into old buildings believed to be haunted..like ghost adventures. OK, the similarities are there, but in this mockumentary the Grave Encounters crew go to a psychiatric hospital that is assumed to be haunted. You first get to see how they interact with each other, how they get their interviews, and how much they believe in the ghost that they chase. Spoiler Alert...they don't. That is until they are locked in and they encounter horrors beyond their expectation.
Now the ghost and effects are pretty impressive. Without music to spoil the upcoming shock it's even more impressive. You keep looking for that ghost in the background and the occasional moving door. Now the down side is the ending. After all the ghost encounters and running and screaming, you are sitting their when the ending comes and say 'that's it? Isn't there more'?  Sadly there isn't.
This mockumentary is impressive in the beginning, middle, and near end. And it makes for a nice late night flick with friends. I wouldn't buy it, but its good to see it once. Ghost Adventure fans will see the similarities to it and compare. BUT, if that show had the same encounters as this movie it would be a top rated show, but without the tragic ending. Plus whats up with the haunted insane asylum themes? Ever heard of a mansion people?

Bride of Chucky

N: Never get in the way of Chucky or you wont be so lucky. That's right. You heard what I said and never mind my rhyme. This little creep show is out for revenge. So if I was the smart one and I know that I am I would just walk the other way and not look back in fear of becoming another victim...
Now after about 10 years Chucky arises from his slumber with the help of his longtime-estranged girlfriend Tiffany (Jennifer Tilly.) Though Chucky seems to be happy to be back in the real world his jealous nature overcomes him and he decides to take matters into his own little hands.
Thus, he turns Tiffany into his counterpart, which by the way the scenes of Tiffany as a doll are quite kinky, but you did not hear that from me. Got it? Therefore the two decide to take a little trip down memory lane in an effort to reclaim some property that just might move their souls into human bodies.
Though in a way I liked the movie it just seems like another sequel that has gone rather bland. As we know the previous squeals filmed in the 80s I would say are cult classics, but now after all these years they decide to make a new version in 1998. Then of course we have the Seed of Chucky, which is another matter I wish not to discuss.

D: Chucky!! Who doesn't love that knife wielding doll? Other than people afraid of dolls. Well in this 1998 movie his returns and this time the lovely Jennifer Tilly is with him as his girl Tiffany.
With her help, the killer doll returns and they out to get a new body. But after a disagreement with his devoted girlfriend Tiffany, he ends up taking her out and transferring her soul into a doll. Now in order to get human bodies....wait you read that? Well then lets go to my little final thought.
I remember seeing this as a teen and thought it was so cool. I still do. It maybe goofy and makes a mockery of the old Chucky movies. But its fun. You have some laughs, shed some tears, must mostly laughs. It's one of those movies you watch when you are flipping through the channels and can't find anything. And it's not scary...its fun! Of course some scenes your sitting there and wondering, 'who would do that with dolls'? But you can't deny Chucky's signature laugh. I love it. I want it for my ringtone.

Nothing But Trouble

N: Another classic horror/comedy with all the quirky quips and laughs-come to you direct from a sleepy town with dangerous and crazy police forces and a mean old tempered judge (Dan Aykroyd) that rules the bad lands of Shire Valkenvania. A "nice Town" as Chase put it. Though not my cup of tea I must admit. But oh well. Indeed,  welcome to the town of hell. A town with rules and no rules...because one man for generations has judged those that have passed through the town of Valkenvania. One man that makes his own verdicts. Just don't look out back as many of those that have been caught red handed have been put to death and the skeleton remains tell of offal and agonizing stories.

Again I would like to extend my deepest salutations. May I welcome you to Shier Valkenvanih where your worst nightmares have just  begun. Nay, the fun has just begin I should say!  But you wont be alone so don't worry. You've got an all star cast to keep you safe. Well maybe. Chevy Chase, and lets not forget our very sexy Demi Moore. Otherwise, while these guys keep you busy, lets not forget the to mention the very cool and stylish 1990s cell phones and laptops to keep you connected to a nonexistent network.  Likewise The contraptions and gizmo's at the judges house, are aw an inspiring. I want a slide in my house. That just might be fun.

Though in retrospect this film is more distributing than actually horror related, but its enough to turn your stomach. like something out of  a bad dream that when you awake you find that you are actually still in your nightmare.

The Gate

N: Summoning evil creatures from the depths of hell is all the rage in 1987. So step right up boys and girls and cast your spells. Awaken the little minions that have been yearning to be released, and have been slumbering deep underground for centuries. Indeed, watch out as these little rebel rousers; one by one crawl out of the depths of darkness to wreak havoc upon the world.
The plot will literally drag you down the avenues of a hellish nightmare as the forces of evil give rise to a giant over sized demon. Thus, at every twist and turn the kids-the ones that have summoned the rise evil, are attacked by the menacing demons with relentlessness.  Likewise watch out for giant hands out stretching beneath the bed. Dead corpses tearing out of the walls. Its a fantastic movie, at least for the 80s that is.
The blue screen special effects though fantastic for that era still needed a lot of work. Though the claymation demons and the characterization is so real like that you really cant find that feeling into days demonic movies.
In the grand scheme of things the kids are trying to save the world from ending. So tune in to find out what happens. Just be careful about casting any spells anytime soon. You never know what is lurking just under your feet or in the shadows waiting to be called out...

AAAH! Zombies!!

N: Cutie cuddly zombies that you can take home. Its all the craze these days, so it seems. Yet what a perfect world it would be to be a zombie in fact. The bad part is that these characters in the movie don't know they are zombies...until at some point the truth slips away like the rotting flesh from your body. Well actually between the gnawing and biting. The tearing of flesh and eating of the brains I doubt I would want to come faced with a zombie let alone become one.
So if you want a somewhat light hear-ted comedy about flesh eating zombies that are running a muck through the streets then this is your movie. It has everything as I have mentioned. With a little bit of love and romance mixed in and references to other zombie movies this movie takes the" brains" so to speak.
However, the acting is a little sub par. Slow in some parts as the over talking gets annoying. A little more action would be great. More eating of brains please.

Yellowbrickroad

N: Small town disappearances. Abandonment. An unsolved mystery. Well then, welcome to a small town that holds an eerier Twilight Zone strangeness that will leave you tormented in an estranged confusion. In essence when I should be describing this movie lets say it sort of falls under the "Blair Witch" spectrum of horror movies.
All in all the acting was very in depth. The carnage came out of left field striking so fast that when you react you have to look away as the horror and shock of what has been done ravishes your mind like a hatchet striking the back of your head.
The group that follows the YellowBrickRoad stumble one after another as the wilderness and something else I shall not mention terrorises the group. Only the screams that echo throughout the forest fall deaf and silent.
Some of the cuts and computer generated effects don't really work so well. But what can I say its a low budged B rated film. And you know just sometimes those can be the best. Well not this one I would say. But beware. Good luck finding your way back once you enter the forest.

Phantom Museums

N: Brilliant. Outstanding. Mesmerizing. Orgasmic. A collateral composition of breathtaking cinematic magic produced in effect without reliance of computer technology. A a true architectural design of story telling that casts a horrifying reality upon us. Such masterful use of puppetry and an imaginative use of found materials create a dynamic relationship of inspiring and aw struck dramas. As we watch the drama unfold upon the stage we become so hypnotic that you cant stop watching.
With the use of stop motion animation strange doll like figures and a man are brought to life to exist in unnatural surroundings. Each character within these 13 short-timeless films endure an agonizing  existence that only can be found within the labyrinths of our repressed mind. Though while we watch these puppets come alive throughout the mysterious  fantasy's, we are also introduced to actors that are placed within the enigmatic sets that bring even greater depth to the uncanny stories.
Indeed, I have loved stop motion since I was younger. I even had a chance on several occasions to do some small stop motion movies. Yet I still can not believe how exceptional these short films are, which were produced by the Quay Brothers; as they take you on a thrilling journey that entraps you in the souls of the characters that come alive.

A few of my favorite shorts: Street of Crocodiles, Stille Nacht III

Beneath The Darkness

N: You know what you will find beneath the darkness? Only darkness and nothing more. Poor Denis Quaid. What have you gotten yourself into? Question after question rattles around in my mind as I try and find any good parts in this movie that would be worth talking about. Its another horror movie where a devious mortician who has control of the town is hiding a very dark and disturbing secrete. It seems that he can't let go of the past and is reliving it every night behind closed doors. Actually, perhaps its harder than you think to let go of the past? In fact I know someone that lost her mother about four years ago and they keep voice message on the answering machine. Whats disturbing is that they play the message everyday. Everyday for the last four years. so in essence the main character replays his once cherished life with his once living bride. Oops did I reveal the secrete?
Yet as this film continues and  people continue to get murdered, I find myself watching the clock. Thus, by the end of this stale movie I just want to forget what I had seen and find my own darkness to sulk in.

From Dusk Till Dawn

N: As gun totting killers kick off this flick with a shootout and fire-bombing a store, things just keep getting interesting when two brothers on the run take a few people hostage along the way and head to the Mexican boarder where paradise awaits them.

I was defiantly enticed by the pole dancing babes that keep burning up the stage at the bar, but it dose not get scorching hot until after a few brisk confrontations break out; something that no one expected strikes like a King Cobra slithering at your feet. Thus, a blast of gunfire spills onto the silver screen while an orgy socked bloodbath and flesh eating vampires arise one by one to stalk the remaining folks inside the bar.

Silent Hill

It's tribute time from the D! And what am I paying tribute to? Why one of the coolest adaptations from game to movie ever! I'm talking about the movie Silent Hill.
Now for those of you who don't know about the games listen. This movie is based off of the popular komani game Silent Hill series. In the movie, a mother and daughter go to the abandoned town Silent Hill to solve the mystery of the daughters nightmares and why she calls out the towns name in her sleep. As they near the town they get into a wreck and the daughter goes missing. The mother goes out to find her in the town and is soon introduced to the nightmare that has swallowed the small town.
As a fan of this epic game, its hard not to compare movie and game. But personally I think they did a great job. Especially with the monsters that roam the streets of the town. I think they did a awesome job bringing the grand daddy monster Pyramid head to life. Ahh you beautiful creature. I still cheer out his name whenever I watch this movie and he comes onto screen.
The story is good, the casting is awesome, there is a perfect amount of gore to satisfy the creepiest creep. All in all, I will never get tire of this movie. It is on my shelf and it will stay there. See it! See the weirdness that is Silent Hill!

Waxworks

N: Oh the feeling of a 1980s horror film. It begins with a midnight invitations extended by a stranger. Its liked picking up a hitchhiker or letting a stranger into our house. Trouble is bound to happen. A group of teenagers take part in accepting an invite from this stranger and enter a museum where private parties are all the scream. It becomes very tormenting for me to wach as the kids one by one began to fall pray to the creatures of the museum. But wait these creatures are made of wax. How is it possible I ask myself? Wait and you shall find out....
While this creepy low budget film and early special effects take hold, the true meaning of the museum is discovered and in an epic, but rather confusing battle between the creatures and the remaining teenagers ensue.
It was a heart warming film between the slicing and splatters of blood to say the last. At least the ending was charming when the two remaining teenagers fell in love.

The Ward

N: It would not be a horror flick without a very sexy girl to play a troubled teenager that has been locked away inside an aging ward. It seems that in all cases that all asylums tend to be places governed by ghosts and dark secretes. Kristen is one that has a very dark secret and while she solves her mental issues she becomes torn between the hunting's and the other patients on the ward. People began to disappear. Vanishing into the eerier bowls of the asylum. Yet as we follow along, towards the ending a shocking revelations is reveled and we are left with a sort of shell sock that never goes away. I wish it could. I wish it could....
D: Ahhh, the triumphant return to the crazy house. What more could you want? How about a tale about a luney girl who is admitted to the crazy asylum that is haunted and the said ghost starts a killing spree. All these fun things can be yours in this movie, plus a bonus people! An ending that leaves you asking..."what the french toast?? That's it?!"
This lovely movie starts off with a interesting beginning and then a nice twist, but the ending just leaves you wondering what was the point? Some of the scenes are cool due to awesome camera editing and little to some gore...but the ending, always the ending! Make it stop! I need a hug...

Giallo

N: I loved Adrien Brody in the "Jacket," but I am somewhat unsure about this films performance. Shot in 2009 this movie is more of a thriller than a horror flick. A serial killer with a vengeance takes his madness out on fair and pretty girls with methodical deviance. Like all serial killers this one likes to kidnap these sexy wemon and ravages them with whatever instrument of torture he can wheel. This modern horror thriller is sort of intriguing in the beginning, but flat lines at the end.

Transylvania 6-5000

N: Beware of Frankenstein and the other monsters when you go to Transylvania. You just might end up like the two reporters in the movie that take an assignment and find themselves being chased by what you would deem as the cult classic of horror monsters. The quips of humor throughout the movie are very typical of a 1985 film, but while I was scared for these fellow reporters the comical interactions between the two reportors was worth my time. Its always fantastic to see some of the old actors on the silver screen.

Haunted honeymoon

N:I remember seeing this awhile back on TV....and I could not help but become enticed to watch it again. Its a Glen Wilder classic at its best. Though the movie is somewhat short it is packed with great classic horror footage that will leave you balling in tears with laughter. Larry Abbot (Glen Wilder) must overcome the fear of getting married and so the solution in this movie was to scare him out of his wits ends so that he could get passed this fear. Check it out. But be careful not to watch during a full moon because a werewolf maybe lurking near by as in the movie Larry is stalked by one that wheels a sharp knife....
